Who is “Mr. March”?

21 Wednesday Mar 2012

The Diablo III 2012 wall calender contains some seriously epic looking artwork. The quality of it has impressed me so much that I have decided to see if I could learn more about it. This blog is a continuation of the series I am doing about the artwork that is featured for each month in this year’s calendar.

March brings us a fierce, imposing, character. This is a large, bulky, male human whose facial expression makes it clear that he is not to be trifled with. That serious, and lethal, look is framed by plenty of dark grey hair that retains traces of its original light brown color.

His hair is shoulder length, and free flowing. Yet, someone has taken the time to put his beard into a series of braids. At the center, under his scowling mouth, is a portion of his beard that is unbraided, but still secured. The organic shape of his hair contrasts strongly with the linear scars around his eye and over part of his mouth. The scars do not end there. He isn’t wearing a shirt, and you can see several more scars that look as though they were made by a large, sharp, weapon, (and that have healed long ago).

He is wearing armor that has been secured by a thick chain that goes over his shoulder. There is a face decorating the center of the armor, and it, too, is grimacing at you. In one hand, he holds a double-bladed axe. On his back, you can see the hilts of three more weapons. If I had to guess, I would say that those are swords, and that one of them might be large enough to be a two-handed weapon. His other hand is empty, but clenched into a fist.

Obviously, this seasoned and battle-ready warrior is a Barbarian. I did some digging, but haven’t been able to find anything that would indicate that this particular Barbarian is supposed to be a specific, recognizable, character from Diablo lore. Instead, he seems be the representative of the male Barbarian class in Diablo III.

Before I finish discussing the artwork for March, I want to explain that the image you see of the Barbarian at the top of this page is not, exactly, the same as the one in the artwork for March. The only difference between the two is in how the image was cropped. The Barbarian in the calendar was not as tightly cropped, which lets you see more of him. Not all of him, though, because the calendar artwork cuts him off at the knees.

The Barbarian image you see here, and in the calendar, was once released on the Diablo Facebook page. This happened in May of 2010, along with a few other pieces of Diablo III artwork. I went to the Diablo III Facebook page as I was writing this blog, but the image of “Mr. March” is not there now.

Going back to the artwork in the calendar, it seems that the Barbarian has been superimposed over a background that includes a gold colored sky, and a city that looks to have been built directly into a mountainside. This is the city of Ureh.

Ureh is also called The City of Lights. It was first mentioned in The Kingdom of Shadows, which was written by Richard A. Knaak in 2002. I’m not going to do a complete book review within this blog about the calendar art, so, suffice it to say that Ureh was a very significant location in that story.

At one point, the city of Ureh was something that Blizzard planned on including into the Diablo III game. In 2009, Jay Wilson said in an interview that they had decided to remove Ureh from the game as a setting, in an effort to try and get the game out sooner.

There is something else interesting about the artwork for March. Flip over the calendar, and take a look at the back cover. You will be able to find the Barbarian. However, the art on the back of the calendar shows him from head to toe, and not cropped like he is in the March artwork. The art on the back also shows more of the city or Ureh. I’ve no idea what prompted Blizzard to make changes between the art on the back of the calender, and the art that is featured for the month of March inside the calendar.

D3 release date, May 15th, official, plans

In case you were living under a rock (or just without access to the internet) yesterday some pretty monumental news was dropped on our collective heads. News so incredibly profound that many of us thought “is this real life?” Okay, maybe that’s stretching it a little bit, but needless to say I had to pick my jaw off the ground.

What in the bloody hell was announced yesterday? Tell me already!

Okay, prepare yourself. You might want to sit down and hold onto something, perhaps brace your jaw …

WE HAVE AN OFFICIAL DIABLO III RELEASE DATE

Still with me? I’ll give you a few moments to collect yourself; it took me a few moments to collect myself too. Shock can be a very, very tricky thing. Best not to rush it right? Right.

Alright. I’m good now, but I think you failed to ACTUALLY give us the EXACT day that we’ll all be losing our souls to the Lord(ess) of Terror.

Erp! You’re quite right. I should rectify that shouldn’t I now? The last thing I should do would be to artificially stretch this out any longer. That’d be quite mean of me now wouldn’t it.

… [blank stare] …

Ooops! Silly me, there I go again not telling you the infos you so desperately desire.

… *ahem* …

Riiiiiiight. I was just getting to that part. Ready? Oh, of course you are, I should just type it …. right …. noooooow ….

May 15th, 2012

Don’t worry, this is 100% official. This information wasn’t “leaked” by some over-zealous retailer. This came directly from Blizzard itself. So now that we finally have a release date we can all plan our excuses for calling in and/or planning time off to lose ourselves all over again (or for the first time in some cases!).

Annnnd for the record I just want to point out that while both Breja and I were not accurate at predicting the release date, I was closer with my prediction! Poor, poor Jen. She couldn’t even remember that there aren’t 32 days in the month of June!

… /facepalm …

Hey now, I’m a funny guy … right? Right? Okay, maybe this all has been funnier in my head. (Hi Aprillian! ^^;)

Anyhoo … what are YOU planning on doing? Going to attend a midnight release? Stay home so you can play at exactly 12:01am? Take time off? Send us an email and let us know what your plans are.

As for me, I now have a deadline for some cool stuff that I realllllly need to take care of so that certain really cool things can happen that night. What things? Well, that you’re just going to have to wait and see. No I’m not teasing to be silly this time. You really will have to wait.

Diablo III Haiku

15 Thursday Mar 2012

This month I am taking part in a project called National 10-Haiku-Per-Day Month. This is the second year that it has existed.

In short, this is a collaborative haiku project where participants write ten haiku every day in the month of March. Some of those haiku get submitted to the project, and all of them get turned into a book sometime after the month is over. All of the money from sales of the book go to a charity called Room to Read.

I realize that not everyone is familiar with this form of poetry, so I will explain. A haiku is a poem that consists of three lines. The first line must have ten syllables. The second line must have seven syllables. The third line must have five syllables. It looks as though it would be really simple to write a haiku, but, many find it to be deceptively difficult.

The theme for this year’s National-10-Haiku-Per-Day-Month is “Earth, Air, Fire, Water”. However, since I have been spending a lot of my free time playing the Diablo III beta, some of the haiku that I have been writing this month are influenced by the game. Most of them do not fit nicely into the theme for the project, so I have decided to share them here, with all of you who love Diablo III.

Zombies crawl from earth
I shoot them with my crossbow.
Demon Hunters rule!

Server shutting down?
Zombies pop out of the ground.
I am not done yet!

Skeleton army
Crawling out of their grave sites
Coming right for me

Burning to go play
More Diablo 3 beta
Must finish work first

Group game in D3
Caused my computer to freeze
Had to hard restart

The Skeleton King
Returns from his grave and fights
But… not for that long

Turned around to find
Cast of Army of Darkness
Marching down the stairs

That’s all for now. I’ve got half the month of March to go, so there is potential that I will end up writing more Diablo III haiku in the next couple of weeks. If you want to keep up with all the haiku that I am writing for the National-10-Haiku-Per-Day-Month, and more, follow me on Twitter @Queenofhaiku.
